Don't
forget to check out the Mello Cads'
last show of their residency at the Knitting Factory tomorrow night
(April 23rd). The show was selected as the "Critic's Choice" in this
week's Los Angeles New Times. Here's what they had to say:
"Kitsch
them: On their debut CD, Soft As A Rock, the Mello Cads
make it perfectly clear that it's more about "the Association or
Harper's Bizarre" than "the Beatles or the Stones." With an ultra-schmaltzy
persona that makes Barry Manilow seem like Handsome Dick Manitoba,
cocktail-clutching head Cad David Ponak comes off like a cross
between Jack Jones and Mike Douglas in his wry, Playboy
After Dark, delivery of classic hits and curios by such soft-rock
Svengalis as Paul Williams, Burt Bacharach, and Jimmy
Webb. For their monthlong residency in the suitably intimate AlterKnit
Lounge, Ponak (who plays similar lighter-than-air fare weekly
on KPFK's Liquid Room) has assembled an onstage extravaganza
complete with a coterie of go-go girls and musical contributions from
album producer Linus Of Hollywood as well as members of the
Wondermints and the Negro Problem. The kitsch is back,
which essentially means you don't have to feel embarrassed anymore
shouting out for "Barbarella" instead of "Free Bird". -- Jim Freek

You've been hearing us talk about
it for months, and now the Mello Cads' debut CD, "Soft As
A Rock", has FINALLY been completed and mixed! The CD will
be released on Franklin Castle in the next few months, and the Mello
Cads will be doing a residency at LA's Knitting Factory in
April. Here's the press release:
MELLO CADS RETURN
"SOFT AS A ROCK" COMING TO THE STAGE AND TO THE STORES.
For the last year or so there's been a deafening silence in the Los
Angeles music scene. Through the late 90's, local lounge/soft pop
legends the Mello Cads thrilled audiences with their groovy mix of
magically crafted originals and covers of classics and hidden gems
from the likes of Burt Bacharach, Jimmy Webb, and Neil Hefti. Lately,
however, the Mello Cads have been missing. Rumors abounded. Had lead
Cad David Ponak really become a monk? Had he been murdered
by Japanese call girl?
The truth of the matter is Ponak is fine. He's been spending the past
year enjoying his international playboy lifestyle, hosting his radio
show "The Liquid Room" on KPFK, and most importantly, plotting
the return of the Mello Cads. He's spent a good part of the past 15
months locked away in the studio with producer Linus Of Hollywood
creating the Mello Cads debut release, Soft As A Rock, to be released
this spring through Franklin Castle Records. Not content with merely
a collection of songs, they've created a concept album, a "song
cycle," if you will. Soft As A Rock tells a story through song,
word, sound, and heartbreak. In addition to substantial musical contributions
from Linus, the CD features guest appearances from the legendary Paul
Williams, fellow Franklin Castle recording artist Kim Fox,
and Nick Walusko from the Wondermints, to name just a few.
The music of Soft As A Rock is breathtakingly lush, melodic, and groovy.
Soft As A Rock has turned out to be too large to be contained on a
mere compact disc.
Soon, it will be a live, on stage extravaganza. Ponak has assembled
a set of incredible musicians to bring the story and music of Soft
As A Rock to the stage. The line-up includes Probyn Gregory
(Brian Wilson, Wondermints) on guitar and horns, the amazing Bob
Remstein on keyboards, Nelson Bragg (The Negro Problem)
on drums, and Linus Of Hollywood himself on bass. The stage
version of Soft As A Rock will be more than just a live show; it will
be a total entertainment experience.
